I am currently teaching a Christian History class at Rocky Bayou Baptist Church. Many in the the class have been to a Roman mass, but no one had experienced the liturgy at an Eastern Orthodox church. Would it be an imposition to bring the class to a service one Sunday. We would certainly follow any guidelines you feel neccessary.

Yours in Christ

I am trying to organize a similar series on Orthodox Cooking at our parish. Could someone give me any details on how yours is working...if you have done it in the past...how it will be set up, etc. Just picking your brain! Thank you and have a blessed Lent.

Hi Joyce, welcome to our website!
I'll see if I can get a member of our Philoptochos to post a response for you.

Hi, Joyce. Thank you for the email. We're always glad to share Philoptochos ideas. The cooking classes began last year. It is now an annual program. The target audience is adult, but GOYA members find the classes interesting as well. Here are the details:

The Saints Markella and Demetrios chapter presents an annual 3-part series of cooking classes showing how to make foods used in religious services – Kolyva, 5-Loaves Bread, and Prosfora.
Format: Well-scripted cooking show, with audience participation highly encouraged. Narrator explains the Scriptural significance of that session’s food. Two ladies demonstrate while the narrator explains each step in the process of making it. Every stage of preparation is ready beforehand, ensuring a smooth transition from one step to the next.
Frequency: First Saturday of the month for 3 months, 2:30-3:30 pm, ending shortly before regularly scheduled Vesper services.
Timing:
oKolyva, several weeks before Saturday of Souls;
o5-Loaves bread, just before the Artoklasia service; and
oProsfora, the bread with no eggs or dairy, during Lent.
Visual Aids: Participants receive a copy of that day’s recipe in a protective document-sleeve.
Admission: To defray the cost of the ingredients, $10 per individual (waived for Philoptochos members and GOYAns), maximum $20 per family.
How this fits into the Philoptochos mission: The Orthodox Christian Cooking Series preserves and perpetuates Orthodox Christian concepts and promotes the Greek Orthodox Faith and traditions, in accordance with its doctrines, canons, discipline, divine worship, usages and customs.

Can you tell me when your 2010 Food Festival will take place?
Also, who is the 2010 Festival Chairperson?

Sincerely,

Steve Lemonakis
